Gingery Projects

Home Foundry

  • Backyard metalcasting:  Top site - plenty of info for beginners and a range of booklets to get you started.
  • C McKeown's home foundry:  Nice step by step stuff, particularly good write up and pictures on follower boards, and pictures of very neat castings including a tangential fan (my favourite).
  • Chipmakers metalworld:  Large site, lots of info on casting and metalworking in general.
  • Chris Boyers pages:  Home machine shop and foundry stuff, nice homemade electric furnace and some Gingery projects cookin' in the pot.
  • Condor metalworks:  Info on casting crucibles
  • Denis Leconte furnace:  Another Gingery inspired furnace, some great pictures and good use of freely available domestic items
  • John Bump's home foundry:  Step by step description of the casting process including the furnace and accessories
  • Lost and Foundry:  Aluminium and brass casting guide.
  • Making green sand:  A recipe and description of green sand using the bentonite clay in freely available "cat litter"
  • Monster burner page:  Probably the most popular page out there on the web for propane fired burners.
  • OUPower:  Plenty of pictures on the step by step process of making up a home foundry.
  • Ray-Vin shop and foundry pages:  Nice pages, information on lost foam casting.
  • Ron Reils pages:  Lots of info on burners for both casting and forging - this is a MUST SEE page of high importance amongst hobby casters
  • Rupert Wenigs foundry:  Instigator of the Monster Burner, based on Ron Reils format. Pics of Ruperts foundry and equipment.
  • Spare time labs:  Kustaa Nyholm's pages - some great stuff on casting iron.
  • Tatara furnace:  See videos of Japanese students making their own steel from raw materials. Big downloads, but very interesting.
  • The propane foundry:  Adrian Hodgson has been running a nicely made propane powered furnace for the last three years, currently being used for making aluminium and brass ingots. Some handy supply links for UK based casters too.
  • The shed:  Terry Browns foundry and machine shop.
  • Vikki Ford pages:  Home casting, toolmaking, mini lathe mods.

Home Machine Shop

MICE

  • Building a Seal 15cc IC engine:  Collaborative effort under the Craftmanship museum banner to build a Westbury Seal.  Well worth a look.
  • CDI system:  CDI system for miniature engines, even has a PIC microprocessor in it.
  • EVIC:  Electronic Valve Internal Combustion engine. Instead of camshafts, this small engine uses solenoids to open and close the inlet and exhaust valves.
  • George Luhrs miniature model engines:  Beautifully crafted engines, these are extremely small!
  • Hodgson Nine:  Brilliantly made example of a 9 cylinder radial aero engine. Lots of attention to detail, and some great tips in there such as how to cast plastic using Alumilite.
  • Kens Model Engines:  A "must see" site - single cylinder engines, twins, fours and even a V8. Lots of pictures and videos to download.
  • Pierre Scerri site:  This has to be the ultimate MICE project - a 1/3 scale racing Ferrari, don't forget the video interview too…
  • Rons Model Engines:  Nice range of model petrol engines, all made to a very high standard.
  • Tryggve's site:  Model engines from single cylinder up to V8, plenty of pics and some videos too.

  • DMD Australia:  Casting a block for an Austin Healey 3000 in aluminium. Beautifully made patterns.
